I have an emergency. What do I do?
When you dial 911, our Enhanced 911 Telephone System automatically collects your name, address, and telephone number. However, if you call from your cell phone or if you use VoIP telephone service, you should be sure to verify your name, location and phone number for the dispatcher.
The dispatcher will ask you:
- What is the nature of the problem?
- Where are you, exactly? (Landmarks are important!)
- What is the patient's condition?
Even if you don't know the exact condition of the patient, try your best to be as specific as possible. Any information you give the dispatcher is extremely helpful!
The dispatcher may then give you instructions on how to help the patient until the EMS team arrives. Stay on the line and remain calm - help is on the way!
